Perfect Timing

The last few days of clinic were just as tremendous as the first! We were able to serve many military personnel and their families with prescription glasses! Thanks to the combined efforts of Operation Showers of Appreciation, Oakley and other Luxottica associates, and the generosity of North Coast Church, Sons of the American Legion, and Walking Shield, we provided prescription eyewear to over 700 individuals this week! This is an incredible accomplishment, especially considering the fact that we had two shortened days during the week. Every family that we served was blown away by gift of free eyewear, especially coveted Oakley product! We knew that we were there for a reason because countless times throughout the week, mothers came up to us and told stories of how their child had just broken their glasses or how they just found out that their child needed glasses! We also had several military personnel who were about to deploy and did not have proper prescription eyewear! It was a privilege for all of us to provide this service!

One family particularly touched us! With four children and a spouse in the military, this mom had a lot to handle. In addition, one of her children had palsy. Because of this, she was unable to bring him to the clinic. We were able to contact his doctor to get additional measurements in order to make him glasses! Additionally, we made glasses for the mom and another of her children. They presented us with a photo of their family as a thank you gift! The stories of gratitude abound and as we told the families, this was our why of saying "thanks" for their service and it was our joy to serve!

The Camp Pendleton Team on Our Last Day!

Thursday night, we celebrated the accomplishments of the clinic at the Officer's Club at Camp Pendleton. Most of those who had contributed to make the week possible were there to celebrate and participate in an auction to raise money for OneSight! Among the hot ticket items were a limited edition Oakley Fuse Gascan and a handmade Oakley Exclusive Bomb--one of ten trophies ever made!! It raised $800 for OneSight. Overall the auction raised almost $2,000!!

The Difference A Pair Can Make

Hey folks, Doug here; I wrote most of the blog from the Honduras mission and I have the opportunity to help out at this Camp Pendleton Clinic for a few days. It's been fun to see old faces and to meet the awesome team from Oakley. I am so privileged to be associated even for a few days with these incredible people. We had some outstanding volunteers today that donated their time to help others.

Two young kids come to mind that came through the clinic today; this little fellow pictured above was the cutest little guy. Not a first time wearer of glasses, you could see how his expression would change when his glasses were off and he couldn't see. The confused look and the creases in his brows that would instantly appear. A look of contentment would appear when his vision was restored. Is there anything better than that?

Another amazing story was about a toddler born with cataracts. This type of eye disease usually affects the eldery, but in this case the affliction was hereditary. The procedure for removing these in an older person is very simple, but for a 20 month old, it is not that simple. She will have to wait for several years before she is able to have this surgery. We have undertaken the task of having 2 pairs of glasses made for her because of the severity of her condition. The amazing thing is how she has accepted her glasses and how she can function as a happy normal little kid. Having these two kids lead normal happy lives is supposed to happen isn't??? I know anybody asked would absolutely without thinking answer yes. That is why we are here, helping kids be kids!

OneSight, OneTeam, One Great Day!

The rains parted and Oakley showed up in full-force to serve the military community in San Diego! After all that we learned in our first day of clinic, we were able to streamline our activities and provide a great experience for volunteers and recipients. Not only was there better weather, but all of the equipment was humming, spirits were high, and recipients were grateful and having fun! While patients waited for their glasses to be produced on the OneSight lab (pictured below), they watched Shrek II and played Bingo to score Oakley prizes.

In addition to the frames donated by Oakley (pictured below), volunteers have come down from Foothill Ranch to help out in the clinic! Thanks to the support from our other Luxottica Team Members, each and every one has contributed greatly to the clinic, gained optical skills, and enjoyed making a huge difference in the lives of military families. It is privilege to serve those that have served us by providing them with a great pair of glasses! Nestor, from Oakley's military sales department, has joined us for several days to extend Oakley's support for our service men and women!

While patients were waiting, volunteers were busily working in the lab! Amy, from Oakley's retail training department, learned how to use the edging machine (pictured below) to cut the lenses. She volunteered for the day to prepare for her trip to Chicago with OneSight in May. Devin, Bryan and Nicole from Oakley's Rx Customer Service Center and Jared from Oakley's Operation's team also assisted in the lab!

The best part of the day was the joy on the children's faces as they received their glasses! Thanks to Evan, Oakley's Global Trainer, we captured many of these priceless images! We hope that these will give you a glimpse of our experience and enable you to be apart of it for a few moments!

Today was the first day of clinic and we hit the ground running! We left the hotel at 7 am, and after running by Starbucks, we hit the clinic site with a passion to help as many as we could today. We were hosted by the North Coast Community Church, who graciously gave us access to their campus for the clinic this week. Much to our visitors from around the country's chagrin, it was a wet, cold day in Southern California. When we started it was about 45 degrees with pouring rain, however, our spirits could not be extinguished. The team worked together with a purpose and precision that would suggest that we had been together for many years, as opposed to just meeting the night before. Our goal was to help 200 children of servicemen and women, and also to help our servicemen and women who were stationed in this area. We blew our goal away by helping 258 people today. We had several great stories, from our recipients as well as our team members.

Starting off with the team members, the story on everyone's breath was about Juliana from Oakley and her teaching of the card game "Euker". If you have any questions, just ask her! We had some interesting characters on the team...Dan, from Chicago, who was working hard in the lab all day...Evan..from Oakley, who had no lab experienced but learned it with no problem, and even taught other Oakley team members on how to edge lenses....Scott, our mission manager from Mississippi, who always had the perfect encouragement at the right time...Meybel and Olivia from Oakley who helped work the dispensing, getting blisters on their hands from all the adjustments..so many more you will hear about in the next blog, and even a Cridder from Louisiana

Today really was quite touching, as one of our stories, we had a child with a high prescription. He was 5 years old, and at 5 he was prone to losing or breaking his glasses. Jonathan and Tim from Oakley were working at frame selection and saw the prescription. They partnered with Juliana, and decided that he needed 2 pair, just in case something happened to the first pair. When he was being dispenesed his glasses, his mother broke down in tears that we would give him a back up pair. We were blessed to help these families who needed and appreciated our presence so much.

We had two children that were handicapped, and we rushed them through to make it easier on them. Their mother was so touched she brought us lemons as a thank you gift. We had so many men and women who were so thankful for our helping them. One was a young man who just had returned from active duty in Iraq, and was leaving in two months for Afghanistan. Our last recipent of the day was a young boy, who had been waiting for a while, with his family. Our mission team invited him to come into the lab to see his glasses being made. After such a long wait, this was the most exciting part of his day! He beamed from ear to ear, and in addition we gave him an Oakley hat to make up for all the wait.

The team is amazing, and although Juliana is in charge of writing the blog, we are all taking turns helping her. This entry is from Greg, a team member from Louisiana...and the nicest cridder you'd ever meet!

Arrival

16 OneSight Team Members representing Oakley, Lenscrafters, and Sunglass Hut met in Carlsbad, CA Sunday afternoon to kick off our Eye Care Clinic for Marine families in the Camp Pendleton Area. We enjoyed a California tradition--Chipotle--for dinner. Once we arrived at our lovely Ramada Carlsbad, we unloaded boxes of Oakley frames and prepared them for our first day of clinic. Anticipation and excitement filled the room, especially for our first-time team members from Oakley!
After some card games, good laughs, and hot tub runs, we grabbed some z's before our first day!

Not So Sunny Southern California

It's a rainy Friday afternoon at Oakley and the building is quiet--most of the employees have left for the Valentine's Day weekend. Last minute communications have been sent and arrangements made. The Oakley team is anxiously awaiting Sunday when we will welcome our out-of-town team members to Southern California for Oakley's first ever Regional OneSight Clinic. We look forward to a great night on Sunday, getting to know the team, having orientation and enjoying some yummy food. Hopefully, the clouds and rain will break over the weekend so that we can enjoy a sunny, warm week near the beach!
Monday through Friday we will serve local military families through an OneSight Eyecare Clinic! We know that we will have many pictures and stories to share, so be sure to check the blog for daily updates!

Getting Ready...

Welcome to the OneSight Camp Pendleton Blog!! A group of about 20 Oakley and other Luxottica employees will be serving the families of military personnel in a one-week eye care clinic near Camp Pendleton Marine Base in San Diego. The family members receive eye exams on base, but do not have access to affordable prescription glasses. We will be providing frames donated by Oakley and other companies for the families to select and will produce prescription glasses on site at no cost to the families! This is an exciting opportunity for Oakley to celebrate our relationship with OneSight in our first-ever Regional Eye Care Clinic. We are so greatful for the support of experienced OneSight volunteers that will be team members on this trip!
We are also grateful to Walking Shield for helping to set up this clinic and to North Coast Church in Vista, CA for hosting the clinic!
From February 15-20, we will post daily stories and pictures from our clinic experience! We are so excited to share this experience with you and hope you will log on to keep up on our activities.
